Cusco City

In the City
  • Cathedral: Contruction of the Catedral began in 1560 but took almost 100 years to complete. The church was built on top of the palace of the eigth Inka, Viraqocha, using red granite slabs from the fortress at Saqsayhuaman. Two auxiliary chapels sit on either side. Here we can observe its construction in Baroque- Style as well as its many paintings from the Cusqueñian – School.

  • Koricancha Ceremonial Place and Santo Domingo: Koricancha , meaning the "golden enclosure", was built to honor Inti or the Sun God. It was the richest Inka temple and had gold plated walls flecked with precious stones. The church and convent of Santo Domingo were built on topo f the Inka shrine. The buildings the two cultures together.

Outside the City
  • Sacsayhuaman - Inca site: It is an impressive example of Inka architecture. It is made up of three large terraces which overlap in a zigzag fashion. The enormous granite ramparts styrech about 985 ft, with stones as high as 17 ft, some weihing as much as 350 tonnes. Thousands of men were recruited to wrestle the huge stones into place.

  • Qenqo - Inca site : Known as "labyrinth" in Quechua, rock channels flowed with llama blood or sacrificial chicha(corn beer) during ceremonias honoring the sun, moon, and stars.

  • Puca pucara – Inca: site : Meaning "red foro" in Quechua, this site was more likely a tambo or rest stop rather than a military post. The complex contains rooms, plazas, paths, aqueducts, and lookouts.

  • Tambomachay (Water Temple) - Inca site : This series of platforms, niches, and functioning fountains testify to the Inkas' worship of water as a key life force. It is believed this site honors the water deity.
